Cachalot

Le projet de sous-marins de la classe Cachalot fut influencé par les limitations du traité naval de Londres et par les caractéristiques du sous-marin allemand U-135. Par la suite, la classe Cachalot servit de base à tous les designs américains de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Pour la première fois dans l’histoire de l’US Navy, la soudure fut utilisée aussi largement dans la construction de sous-marins. L’USS Cachalot se trouvait à Pearl Harbor au début de la guerre. Le sous-marin mena trois missions de combat et endommagea un pétrolier japonais.
