Le début de la course aux dreadnoughts fut d’abord ignoré par l’Italie en raison du coût élevé de cette nouvelle classe et de l’entrée en service de pré-dreadnoughts. Le projet du premier dreadnought ne démarra qu’en 1908. Pour la première fois, des tourelles triples de batterie principale furent utilisées et l’artillerie antitorpilles fut montée en tourelles. Construite selon ce projet, la Dante Alighieri mena jusqu’à quatre missions navales pendant la Première Guerre mondiale en tant que navire amiral de la flotte italienne.
