• Description: After the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889 and the mutinies of the 1890s, Brazil aimed to rebuild its Navy. As part of this effort, armored deck cruisers were ordered from Armstrong in 1895. However, due to financial difficulties, only one out of the four ordered cruisers was commissioned by the Brazilian Navy. The lead ship was sold to Chile, and the United States repurchased two more cruisers to prevent Spain from acquiring them after the Spanish-American War. One of them entered service under the name Albany. The ship participated in the Philippine-American War and later in World War I.
